The 8th annual Santa Cruz Downwind Ryders Cup was held last Saturday, May 20th. The event was hosted by Ghostryders Watermen Club Santa Cruz and BARK Paddleboards. Dozens of participants gathered at Davenport Landing Beach where they waited paitently for the thick fog to subside and set off around 2:15 p.m., 45 minutes over the scheduled start.
The 14 mile race ended at Main Beach, right next to the Santa Cruz Wharf on a warm, sunny afternoon. The first contestants reached the crowded beach around 4:30 p.m., and continued to arrive for the next couple hours.
After the grueling race, the men and women competitors found the energy to run to the finish line as they were cheered on by friends and family.
