Bethany Hamilton was 13 years old and already had a National Scholastic Surfing Association title under her belt when a tiger shark attack took her left arm off. Remarkably, she re-learned how to do everything required for her beloved sport: paddling, balancing and most of all, maintaining the courage to keep going back out, day after day.
Tonight the Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks present Movies at The Mission: Soul Surfer. This inspirational film starring AnnaSophia Robb, Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid tells Bethany’s story.
Tonight’s show continues the 2015 Mission Series, a family-friendly buffet of fine arts exhibits and outdoor entertainment held at the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park, culminating in the Mole and Mariachi Festival on September 19. The snack shack will be open, but be sure to bring lawn chairs and blankets to stay cozy throughout the show. The movie starts at dusk, but doors open at 7pm, so arrive early to save a spot!
Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park, 144 School St, Santa Cruz. 7pm-10pm. Free. Watch the trailer here.
