What makes Santa Cruz a magnet for creatives?

Written By Rebecca Unitt.

Did you know that Santa Cruz holds the fifth densest artist population in the U.S? For an inside look at our community’s thriving creative sector, we spoke to Arts Council Santa Cruz County Executive Director Michelle Williams.

Our interview with Michelle is featured in our Economic Development Department’s “In Depth” video series on ChooseSantaCruz.com. The series features the stories of local entrepreneurs and leaders in key Santa Cruz industries with this month’s focus on the creative industry. It includes Sonia Le, owner of the original Cosmo Chic fashion line and ceramist Anne Hazel who works in a shared studio space at the Tannery Arts Center.

Michelle leads an organization that provides resources and support to the arts community and helps to foster the creative spirit in Santa Cruz. We met with her at Radius Gallery on the Tannery Arts Center campus to dive deep into the industry and better understand why Santa Cruz is such a magnet for artists and creative businesses.

The Artbar and Cafe at the Tannery Arts Center provides an eclectic space for creatives to meet and enjoy each other’s company.

Anne Hazel finishes glazing her latest ceramic pieces in her shared working studio at the Tannery Arts Center.
