Santa Cruz City Arts in partnership with Ecology Action and their annual Bike Week invites you, the Santa Cruz community, to share your ideas for public art along the Rail Trail at a Westside Trail Mixer on Sunday, May 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. Bike on over for free family-friendly activities, music, food and art party! Meet next to Humble Sea Brewery, adjacent to the railroad tracks.
This first phase of the Rail Trail is the highest priority in the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail Master Plan. It will be a paved, 12 to 16-foot wide multi-use path spanning the Westside of Santa Cruz from Natural Bridges through the Circles neighborhood and proceeding to the Municipal Wharf. Construction of this 2-mile segment is slated to begin in November.
Residents are encouraged to help plan how art can enhance the Rail Trail experience by recording or writing down what makes the neighborhood special and by suggesting images, poetry or other creative expression that could be incorporated into paved trail areas.
If you’d like to speak with our City engineers who are constructing the Santa Cruz Rail Trail for some inspiration or project details, they will be available at our City Hall to YOU community event on Thursday, May 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Peace United Church.
More information about the 32-mile Rail Trail Project that will connect Watsonville to Davenport, is available at the Santa Cruz County Friends of the Rail & Trail website.
We hope to see you and your bicycle on Sunday afternoon!
