The second annual Northern California division of the World Dog Surfing Championship took place this last Sunday, August 5, at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the competition. Starting around 10 a.m., the first heat was the small dog category, followed by medium, large, and then tandem.
Local favorite Skyler placed first in dog/human tandem with her owner Homer, and first in the large dog category. The crowd went wild when Skyler jumped from her surfboard and landed on a fellow riders board, then the two pups continued to ride to shore. The dogs surfed until about 2 p.m. with an ever-growing crowd cheering them on.
It was a day to remember, with talented dogs, special guest Pickles the Pig, and a frenzy of feeding humpback whales breaching right off shore.
