Biarritz, France in 2011
Rosarito, Mexico 2013
Cornwall, united kingdom 2015
now Santa Cruz, CA 2018
The goal of The Global Wave Conference is to unite the surf, conservation and technology/innovation communities in conserving our oceans, raise awareness, and share best practices from across the world in addressing shared challenges, and create new working connections between diverse geographies and communities.
Save the waves protects coastal ecosystems around the world in partnership with local communities, utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, economics, and direct action. Another goal is to raise awareness and share best practices throughout the world to address ocean plastics, water quality development, and climate change. There will be more plastic than fish by 2050, plastic pollution is growing three times faster than GDP, and marine litter costs 13 billion dollars a year. Discarded fishing nets, plastic bags and other debris can sink to the ocean floor and break and smother coral reefs, or entangle surfers or other marine mammals in the line up. The top 10 pollutants to our ocean is food wrappers, bottle caps, plastic beverage bottles, plastic bags, straws, lids, utensils, cigarette butts, balloons, and diapers.
