The community is invited to free trolley tours of our City of Santa Cruz Recycling Center and Wastewater Treatment Facility Monday-Thursday, May 21-24, and our lunch-hour Bike Share ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, May 22, as we celebrate National Public Works Week.
The first trolley tours depart at 12 noon each day with additional tours leaving throughout the afternoons. All tours are family-friendly and board at the southwest corner of Cedar and Lincoln streets.
Tours of the Recycling Center will travel up the coast to the Resource Recovery Facility where passengers will see what happens to the 40 tons of material placed into Santa Cruz blue recycle bins each day and learn about the complex recycling process. These tours are 90 minutes long and depart Monday at 12 noon, Tuesday and Thursday at 2 p.m. and Wednesday at 12 noon and 1:30 p.m.
Trolley passengers touring the award-winning Wastewater Treatment Facility will observe the quality-of-life service that naturally processes 7 million gallons of wastewater daily. They will also see the colorful new ocean-themed mural that spans the plant’s long driveway with heights up to 24 feet. These tours are 60 minutes long and depart Monday at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday at 12 noon and 1 p.m., and Wednesday at 3 p.m.
The community is also invited to celebrate with Mayor David Terrazas and City officials at the Bike Share ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, 12:15-12:45 p.m., at the City Hall Bike Share station, 809 Center Street. Bike Share is the City’s new partnership with Jump Bikes providing 250 electric on-demand bicycles for use by residents and visitors within Santa Cruz city limits. The many Bike Share station locations are outlined on the City website along with registration details and payment options.
The City heartily welcomes all community members to participate in our National Public Works Week Bike Share and trolley tour festivities. We hope to see you there!
