Although our Santa Cruz beaches will remain closed from 11am to 5pm and Shelter-in-Place orders will continue to be enforced, there are many great ways to make this Memorial Day weekend special.
Memorial Day honors the sacrifices of Americans fallen in war, and although many events have been cancelled this year, you can participate virtually.
These links provide information on how to connect with others from around the nation this weekend: American Legion Virtual Ceremony, National Memorial Day Concert, National Memorial Day Parade, Vietnam Veterans Memorial. And our Library offers an online Veterans History Project with powerful stories of local vets. There is also a powerful War Ink exhibit which provides an immersive experience of veterans focused on tattoo art.
You might also organize a simple neighborhood parade—so long as everyone follows social-distancing protocol.
You can celebrate the spirit of the outdoors by setting up a tent in your backyard or living room! Toast some s’mores on the grill or stove and cozy up to a virtual campfire from YouTube.
Barbecue is a delicious way to start the summer which many local businesses can support. Pick up vegies or meat from your grocer, purchase grilling tools online from a Santa Cruz business, or order takeout burgers from one of our restaurants.
Our Library website provides many family friendly experiences. You might become virtual world travelers by visiting dozens of museums or 33 National Parks. Kids can become Nature Bingo detectives through the Natural History Museum link. And you’ll find activities for all ages by clicking on our Virtual Recreation page.
You might also book a tee time at DeLaveaga Golf Course or drop in at the driving range.
While enjoying these outdoor spaces, be sure to remember your face mask and social distancing. Thank you for doing YOUR part to keep our community safe. And ENJOY the long weekend!
